Contempt matter against Vijay Mallya: Supreme Court will hold hearing on January 18

Contempt matter against Vijay Mallya: Supreme Court will hold hearing on January 18.

The Supreme Court said Tuesday that it will hear the contempt of court case against Vijay Mallya on January 18, 2022, as the Center persists in its attempts to extradite the fugitive businessman to India.

If Mallya, who resides in the UK, does not appear in Court that day for any reason, she will hear the lawyer on her behalf, Living law reported.

The court said: “We have waited long enough, we cannot wait any longer now. The matter of the contempt against Vijay Mallya has to be brought to light at some point and the process must end. ”

The higher court asked lead attorney Jaideep Gupta to assist it as amicus curiae in the case.

Vijay Mallya is charged in a bank loan default case of more than 9 billion rupees involving his defunct Kingfisher Airlines. He was found guilty of contempt of court in 2017, for failing to disclose the transfer of $ 40 million to his children’s accounts and for ignoring the summons to appear in court.

The 2017 order followed a guilty plea from a bank consortium led by the State Bank of India (SBI), which had said that Vijay Mallya had allegedly transferred the amount to her children in a “flagrant violation” of several court orders.

The court had previously rejected a request made by attorney EC Agarwala seeking his exoneration as Mallya’s attorney in the contempt case, which is being heard by a UU Lalit bank judge, Judge Ravindra Bhat and Judge Bela Trivedi.
