An Indian court has slammed the state police for trying to tie Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani to a “fabricated case” of assault on a woman constable.
An Assam court granted bail to Mevani on Tuesday, the same day that he was arrested on April 25 in a case where he was accused of “manufactured” assault. Mevani had just been granted bail in another Assam case over tweets about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Barpeta sessions court asked the Gauhati High Court to take up a petition on its own against recent police abuses in the state. The Barpeta court granted Mr Mevani bail.
