Coutinho Joins Aston Villa as per loan.
Aston Villa has signed Brazilian international Philippe Coutinho on a loan agreement until the end of the season. He is currently with Barcelona, the Premier League club said on Friday.
He will be back together with Steven Gerrard, the former captain of Liverpool. The pair played together at Anfield in 2013-15, and Gerrard is now the manager of Villa.
Coutinho has won two league titles and two Copa del Rey titles with Barcelona. He has played in 16 games during the season in all competitions, scoring two goals.
The 29-year-old had previously spent six seasons with the Premier League playing for Liverpool. He played over 200 appearances and scored 54 goals.
Gerrard gave a rousing speech to Coutinho on Thursday.
“If you go and have a look at his Wiki page, you’ll see a serial winner wherever he goes. He’s won 63 caps for Brazil, played for Barcelona, and was incredible at Liverpool,” Gerrard told reporters.
“I don’t think you get a nickname of ‘The Magician’ if you’re not a special footballer.”
The contract is subject to a medical and worker’s permit being approved. It also includes the option of making it permanent, Villa said.
Coutinho was signed by Barcelona in January of 2018 for 14 million dollars ($192 million) but hasn’t been capable of establishing himself as a first-team player at Camp Nou.
He spent the entire 2019-20 season as a loan player at Bayern Munich.
In 106 matches during his time at Barcelona with 18 months remaining on his contract.
This expires after the 2022-21 campaign. Villa is 13th on the Premier League standings and returns in January. 15 as they play Manchester United.
