Cure From Coronavirus Near? Human Clinical Trial of Covaxin Begins at Odisha’s SUM Hospital

New Delhi: Giving a ray of hope, the human clinical trial of Covaxin, a possible vaccine against the newly developed coronavirus in the country, began Monday at an institute in Odisha.

The clinical trial of BBV152 COVID-19 or Covaxin vaccine reportedly started at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, one of 12 centers selected by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) to carry out the phases one and two of the process.

Developed by Bharat Biotech, Covaxin was administered to various selected individuals who had volunteered to be part of the crucial test.

As part of the process, these volunteers underwent a rigorous screening procedure and were then administered the vaccine strictly according to the protocols of the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

The development comes as coronavirus cases across the country crossed Monday lakh-mark 14 after registering a one-day jump of 49,931 COVID-19 cases. The country’s death toll rose to 32,771 with 708 deaths recorded in one day.

There are 4,85,114 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country, while 9,17,567 patients have recovered and one person has migrated. The recovery rate is 63.92 percent, according to the data.

This is the fifth consecutive day that COVID-19 cases have increased by more than 45,000. According to the Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR), a total of 1.68.06,803 samples had been analyzed as of July 26. Up to 5,15,472 samples were analyzed on Sunday, the highest in a single day.
