Day After Resigning As J&K Lieutenant Governor, GC Murmu Appointed as Newest CAG

New Delhi: A day after submitting his resignation as Deputy Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Girish Chandra Murmu was appointed as India’s new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in an overnight development on Thursday.

Murmu, a former IAS official, was the forerunner of the CAG chair that was vacant with the retirement of incumbent Rajiv Mehrishi when he turns 65 on August 8.

Notably, Murmu was elected as the first L-G of Jammu and Kashmir on October 31, 2019, after its fork from Ladakh last year under the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act.

Earlier today, his position in Srinagar was replaced by former Union minister and experienced BJP leader Manoj Sinha, who expressed confidence that his appointment will usher in development in the newly formed union territory.

Murmu’s resignation came on a delicate day when Jammu and Kashmir marked the first anniversary of the repeal of Articles 370 and 35A of the Indian Constitution. As the first L-G, Murmu also faced severe controversy over the J&K elections, as well as his resistance to restoring 4G Internet services in the Valley.

Previously, Murmu worked in Narendra Modi’s office when he was the Prime Minister of Gujarat. However, after taking the central presidency, Prime Minister Modi had transferred Murmu to join the Union Ministry of Finance.
