Deepika Kumari wishes to help India get team gold

Deepika Kumari wishes to help India get team gold in this Covid crisis.

But not on a bright Sunday morning at the Guatemala Archery World Cup, when the Indian women’s team faced host Mexico in the final.

The Indies, comprising Deepika, Komalika Bari, and Ankita Bhakat, had recovered from a 2-1 deficit to tie for fourth. But it was in the decisive tiebreaker where all the shooters get shy each that Deepika brought her prowess to the field.

Kamalika had a 9 and Ankita an 8 to add 17. The second Mexican to go – Anna Vázquez shot a 10 to go with Alejandra Valencia’s 9. 17-19, with pressure on Deepika to keep India in contention.

Her nasal septum gleamed wonderfully as the bowstring stabilized in her nostrils, Deepika fired an internal 10, a perfect X, to put pressure back on the Mexicans.

The home team had been confident and punchy so far. But Deepika, looking much more self-confident than she has ever done, would step up when necessary and shake up the Mexicans.

Needing 9, the forward wobbling arrow would hit the outer red for a 7, as India would pick its fifth World Cup gold medal.

Ankita had been shooting with confidence, while Komalika faced some nervous moments in the final as India rallied from 57-56, 55-57, 55-57, 57-52 to take the thriller 27-26 in the final set.

Indian women are aiming to qualify for the Olympics to secure a full quota of three goalkeepers in Tokyo. The final victory of the fight will serve them well for the June playoffs. Deepika’s shot also looks safe now and she has a nice gold ring on her.

Later, Ankita Bhakat and Atanu Das would choose bronze by beating Americans Casey Kaufhold and Brady Ellison, 37-34, 35-38, 38-36, 37-35. After exchanging the first two sets, the Indians needed time to find their rhythm.

The starter didn’t see a single 10 from either of the Indians in the mixed match for third place as they started 8, 9, 9, 8 in Set 1.

They returned with enthusiasm shooting 8, 10, 10, and X, perfecting the yellow. A pair of 10s and an inside 10 would see the momentum well and really change. And the last and fourth set was a solid 9, 10, 9, 9.
