Derry Township Police Warn of Business Phone Scam.
DERRY TOWNSHIP – Derry Township Police report a phone scam that affected a local business on Saturday.
Police say a business employee reported that they received a call on their store phone from the Derry Township Police phone number telling them they had to stop all money transactions and count their records saying they allegedly had counterfeit money. .
They then said that before the employee could do anything, the caller transferred the call to the employee’s personal cell phone and appeared to know their name and address. The caller later told the clerk not to say anything to others, including the store manager.
The employee subsequently hung up on the suspicious caller.
The police are telling local businesses that this is fraudulent, and any other businesses that receive this call should hang up and contact the Derry Township Police Department.
They warn that they should not participate in the fraudulent caller scheme, especially if they request the purchase of prepaid debit cards.
