A 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck Ladakh around 10 p.m. Tuesday, the National Center for Seismology reported. The earthquake occurred just days after a strong 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Tajikistan, while tremors of up to 30-40 seconds were felt in Delhi-NCR, other parts of northern India.
In early February 13, a strong earthquake shook Jammu and Kashmir overnight as people ran from their homes to escape being trapped with reports of various structures developing cracks due to the shaking.
There are reports of widespread panic caused by the earthquake with locals in many parts of the Valley spending a sleepless night fearing the blows.
Officials from the disaster management authority had said: “A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale occurred in J&K at 10.34 pm on Friday.
“The epicenter of the earthquake was in Tajikistan with its latitude 31.57 degrees north and longitude 75.09 degrees east. It occurred 10 kilometers within the earth’s crust. Earthquakes from 6 to 6.9 degrees on the Richter scale are classified seismologically as magnitude ‘ strong’.
Kashmir has a history of devastation caused by earthquakes because the Valley is located in a region very prone to earthquakes.
More than 80,000 people died on two sides of the line of control (LoC) in Kashmir A by an earthquake that occurred on October 8, 2005 with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale.
