Elderly Woman Stabbed 20 Times and Sexually Assaulted in Delhi

A 62-year-old woman reportedly died after being stabbed 20 times by a man who also sexually assaulted her in Delhi, police said Monday.

The defendant has been arrested, they said.

Police received information from a hospital on Sunday about the victim.

“Police arrived at the hospital and discovered that the victim had had her throat slit with a sharp weapon and had multiple marks of wounds on her stomach. She had been pronounced dead,” police Priyanka Kashyap said.

A case was subsequently registered under section 302 (murder). During the investigation, police analyzed CCTV footage of the area where the woman was recovered and the identity of the accused was established, after which he was arrested, the officer said.

During questioning, the defendant admitted his crime. Police also recovered the knife, authorities said, adding that the defendant claimed he was drunk during the incident, police said without giving further details about the defendant.

The defendant first slit her throat and then stabbed her more than 20 times, they said, adding that it also appears to be a case of sexual assault.

The body was later sent to the hospital for an autopsy, police said.

The woman’s son said that when he came home after completing his hours of duty as a security guard in Noida and entered the house, he saw his mother lying in a pool of blood.

The woman was from Begusarai in Bihar and used to live in a village in Delhi together with her son and grandson, police said.

He used to sell vegetables near his house. On Sunday, he took out his vegetable cart along with his grandson and then returned home to cook, police said.
