Emmanuel Macron became the first French president to win a second term in 20 years.  

On Sunday, Emmanuel Macron became the first French president in 20 years to be re-elected. His triumph against Marine Le Pen sparked nationwide riots and protests. 

In videos, police are seen rushing demonstrators and firing tear gas to clear areas. 

According to reports, two people have died as a result of police shooting into a single car.

Macron, who became the country’s youngest president when he defeated Le Pen with 66 percent of the vote in 2017, did so again on Sunday, with only 58.8% of the vote.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Macron in a tweet.

However, protesters in the streets of Paris and Lyon believed otherwise.

Videos showing what appear to be peaceful protests appeared Sunday evening. 

But only from what can be seen in the immediate frames. Here are a few of the videos that were taken.

Macron rose to worldwide prominence after attempting to mediate between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Eastern European countries’ conflict.

On the other side, Le Pen has been chastised for her primary backing of Putin. 

She attempted to distance herself from previous comments by denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 

In addition, she was a far-right candidate who threatened to abolish NATO’s combined military command, and she was previously linked to a plan to prohibit Muslim women from wearing headscarves in public.

Macron is a moderate who lost popularity during his first time in office. 

During that time, his support rating plummeted, and there were multiple protests against his presidency.

Among the world leaders who congratulated Macron on his triumph was Zelensky. Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was another.

I am looking forward to continuing to collaborate on the topics that are most important to our two countries and the rest of the world, “Johnson sent out a tweet.

President of the European Council, Charles Michel, stated that the EU “can count on” France for another five years.

“We need a strong Europe and a France fully committed to a more sovereign and strategic European Union in this turbulent time. 

So we can count on #France #5 for another 5 years, “Michel tweeted.
