Ex-minister arrested a month after Bhagwant Mann’s warning

According to authorities, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, a senior Congress politician and former Punjab minister, was detained early this morning on corruption accusations.

The state’s Vigilance Bureau detained the Amarinder Singh government’s Social Welfare and Forest Minister in Amloh.

According to sources, this follows the arrest of district forest officer Guramanpreet Singh and contractor Harminder Singh Hummy, who allegedly supplied information about suspected wrongdoings in the forest department when Mr. Dharamsot was the minister.

According to sources, the agency has also detained journalist Kamaljit Singh, who is said to be a close colleague of the Congress politician.

In April, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann warned that he would take action against the former minister.

Mr. Mann said that his administration had “zero tolerance” for corruption after Punjab Health Minister Vijay Singla was removed from the cabinet last month on a corruption accusation.

Mr. Singla is said to have demanded a 1% fee on bids. The Punjab police’s anti-corruption unit detained him shortly after his departure.

One of the Aam Aadmi Party’s primary pledges was eradicating corruption (AAP). In the 2022 state assembly elections, the party won 92 of the 117 seats in Punjab, decimating the Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party coalition, and the BJP-Punjab Lok Congress-SAD (Sanyukt) coalition.
