London: Facial masks will be mandatory in takeout stores and sandwich shops in the UK under government laws that take effect on Friday, according to media reports.
Downing Street is expected to clarify its position on Thursday after mixed messages from ministers about the use of masks in food establishments, the Metro newspaper reported.
Table service facilities are said to be exempt from the new rules, though buying food at a counter and sitting down to eat inside will be prohibited, according to The Daily Telegraph.
A government source told the newspaper that only table service restaurants would not require masks.
“You have to sit down right away if you’re going to eat. If you can sit down at a table, you don’t need to wear a mask.” This comes before the planned changes to the use of masks.
Starting on Friday, the use of a face mask in stores and supermarkets will be mandatory and anyone who does not comply will be fined up to 100 pounds.
