Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait demands a price guarantee law.

The leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, Rakesh Tikait, demanded on Sunday that the Center introduce a law to guarantee the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops to protect the interests of farmers in the country.

In Mumbai to participate in the ‘kisan mahapanchayat’ (mega conclave of farmers) at Azad Maidan under the banner of Samyukta Shetkari Kamgar Morcha (SSKM), Tikait said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a supporter of the MSP when he was the prime minister. from Gujarat and wanted a national law to ensure that farmers’ interests were guaranteed.

He accused the central government led by Modi of fleeing a debate on the issue.

“The Center must bring a law that guarantees PEM to farmers. There are several issues related to the agricultural and labor sector that need attention and we will travel throughout the country to highlight them,” he said.

Mr. Tikait also demanded that financial aid be given to the families of farmers who died in the year-long protest against the Center’s three agricultural marketing laws.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the government’s decision to repeal the three agricultural laws, which were at the center of the farmers’ protests.

Many farmers were camped on the borders of Delhi since November 2020 with a demand that the Agricultural Products Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Act 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Guarantee and Services Agricultural 2020 and 2020 The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act of 2020 will be reversed and a new law will be enacted to ensure EMP in crops.

The Center, which held several rounds of talks with protesting farmers, had argued that the laws favored farmers, while protesters claimed they would be left at the mercy of corporations because of the laws.
