Firmino and Salah make it difficult for Salah to help Liverpool win at Inter. 

MILAN: Liverpool had a firm grip in the Champions League tie with Inter Milan. A late goal from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah secured them a 2-0 win in an empty San Siro in their first game on Wednesday.

Inter was the stronger side of the chances early on; However, Juergen Klopp’s men proved resilient, even if they weren’t at their best, as they stifled the hosts in check and then wreaked two devastating hits on their opponents.

In a game where they struggled to create chances, Klopp rang the changes in the second period. 

One of the substitutes was a winner and scored a goal – Firmino striking home from an angle to end an impasse in the 75th minute.

After their resistance was to errors broken, mistakes began to take hold. Inter and Salah were on the attack after they failed to get a long ball from the box, putting the game down seven minutes after the time limit.

Although the away goals rule is not being in force, this victory places players of the 2018 Champions League winners in a leading position heading into the next leg, scheduled for the 8th of March at Anfield.

“We anticipated being under pressure as we played in an event in the Champions League,” Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk told BT Sport. “One message we received before the match was that we need to be prepared to endure.

“It was a great performance, and I was able to get a clean sheet.”

Liverpool has won 7 of their Champions League matches this season and extended their longest winning streak in the top club competition in Europe.

Inter was back in the Champions League knockout stages for the first time in over a decade and began brightly in front of a large crowd, unhindered by lower numbers due to COVID-19’s restrictions.

Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez fired off the line early from a distance. Then Hakan Calhanoglu stepped in further, firing at the crossbar after being given too long in the penalty zone.

Liverpool put a lot of effort to score in the opening period but could not find that opening. Sadio Mane’s shot from a free-kick was the top of the goal.

After the break-in between Liverpool and Inter, there was no improvement. The final pass proved to be a failure at the crucial point.

The hosts’ incompetence cost them dearly as Firmino scored to quit the San Siro’s rage and smashed in Andy Robertson’s goal. 

This marked his 11th goal in 11 games as a substitute for Liverpool across all competitions. Since joining the Reds under Klopp, no other player has scored more goals off his bench.

With a slight deflection, Salah smashed into the net in the second half after Virgil van Dijk knocked down Trent Alexander-Arnold’s long shot to secure the win.

The Egyptian has scored in all of his eight previous away games within the Champions League, the second-longest ever run of this kind for a player following Cristiano Ronaldo from 2013 until 2015.

It wasn’t the typical Liverpool; however, they accomplished the task. 

This is the sixth time they’ve won the opening phase of the Champions League knockout tie away from home. They have made progress from each of the preceding five.

“This performance will give us lots of confidence as we had a fantastic performance,” Inter coach Simone Inzaghi stated. “We didn’t deserve to lose, but that’s football.

“I believe we should be proud as we had a fantastically with one of the top teams across Europe.”
