Former Tennis Champion Ash Barty Join Global Celebrity Series.
SYDNEY: Former tennis world number one Ash Barty has signed up for a series of exhibition tournaments with 23 other sports personalities, fueling speculation that her post-retirement sporting career will focus on golf.
Barty, who announced his retirement at 25 last month, will play for the rest of the world team managed by Ernie Els against a US squad led by Fred Couples, another major winner.
The Icons Series will go off in June at Liberty National in New Jersey, with tournaments scheduled for Europe, Asia, and Barty’s home country of Australia.
Pep Guardiola and Harry Kane of soccer, Michael Phelps of swimming, boxers Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya of boxing, and Ben Roethlisberger of American football are among the others taking part in the series.
Barty, who won three Grand Slam titles during her tennis career, has a four-stroke handicap at her Queensland golf club and is married to a trainee professional.
Karrie Webb, a compatriot and golf hall of famer, declared last month that Barty had the potential to be Australia’s amateur golf champion one day.
