Hands too dry due to constant sanitisation? Here are 3 ways to curb it
With the coronavirus outbreak, it has become more urgent than ever to keep our hands sanitized as much as possible. But this frequent washing can lead to another problem: dry hands.
There is no escape from that. Even if you use chemical hand soaps for a rich lather or alcohol-based sanitizers, they can all produce flaky, dry, or disheveled skin. “Especially hand sanitizers can remove all the moisture, leaving our hands chapped and rustic,” explains Anita Golani, founder of iORA, a series of DIY salon kits. Cleaning products often break down and damage the skin’s outer barrier, the stratum corneum, he adds.
Here are 3 ways to reduce that dryness. Take a look below.

Mask your hands
We often apply nourishing masks to our face. With our hands equally focused, an intense boost of moisture is necessary. Golani suggests purchasing a mask making sure to read the ingredient list carefully. “Restore much-needed hydration while fighting dry skin problems with the right set of ingredients. Repeat masking once every 15 days for the best results, ”he adds.
Use products like shea butter or kokum butter to moisturize, or aloe vera to soothe your skin. You can also go for vitamin E and orange extract to brighten your hands.
Try manicure at home
We all miss our regular manicure sessions, but there’s no way you can’t enjoy the same treatment at home. Golani suggests opting for a DIY manicure kit. She explains that the kit should contain the following items to help you get a salon-like experience in the comfort of your home.
- Cuticle cream to nourish damaged cuticles.
- Exfoliating salts to remove dirt, relax tired and worn nerves.
- Mineral scrub to exfoliate dead skin
- Massage in butter to restore moisture after exfoliation.
- Mask made with organic fruit pulp or clay-based formula to hydrate the skin.
Go for a nail restoration treatment
“Constant exposure to chemicals and alcohol weakens nails and makes them more prone to breakage. Incorporate products made with milk protein extracts that nourish your cuticles and strengthen your nails! “says Golani.
He also suggests looking for formulas that contain white chocolate or cocoa extract. “They help fight free radical damage.”
