Police arrested a 38-year-old man in the Didwara village of Jind district in Haryana for allegedly killing his five children in the past four years, two of them in recent weeks.

Police sources said the accused, Jummadin, first confessed to the village panchayat on Thursday, after which he was released to authorities. Migrant worker Jummadin also told police that his wife is pregnant with the couple’s sixth child.

The killings came to light after two of the defendant’s daughters, a seven-year-old boy, and an 11-year-old boy, disappeared under mysterious circumstances on July 15. Jummadin had filed a missing report on July 16, alleging that he and his wife Reena were sleeping when an unidentified man kidnapped their daughters. When asked more, he did not give satisfactory answers, police sources said.

Later, on July 20, a group of local residents was playing near the Hansi Butana Canal when they saw the body of a child. After the police were informed, Jummadin was called to the scene and identified the body as that of his youngest daughter. A search operation was launched and a few hours later, the body of the oldest daughter was also found on the channel, police sources said. Post-mortem examinations of both bodies were carried out and drowning was declared the cause of death, they added.

Police said Jummadin’s brother-in-law, Ahsan, who lives in the neighboring village of Barot, also raised suspicions about his version of events.

“Ahsan’s sister Reena is married to Jummadin. Ahsan also mentioned that despite repeated questions, Jummadin was unable to give a credible answer on how both girls disappeared. Thus, the Panchayat people were involved and the villagers told us Jummadin confessed to killing his five children under the influence of a Kaithal-based occultist. However, he has not told the police about this occultist, “said Ajit Singh Shekhawat, Jind’s Assistant Superintendent of Police.

During preliminary interrogation, police sources said, Jummadin said he had drugged his two daughters and thrown them into the channel. He also allegedly told the villagers that he killed all of his children because he was not financially capable of raising them.

Police said they were also consulting a psychiatrist to shed more light on the case.

“During the investigation, Jummadin’s three children were also found to have died before in mysterious circumstances. Villagers told police that Jummadin had said that he first killed his three-year-old son and four-year-old daughter in 2017, and then killed his 18-month-old daughter in 2019 … Yesterday he approached the police sergeant village, Pramod, the brother of Sanjeev. and confessed to killing all of his children. In the previous three murders, he told villagers that he strangled two of them and poisoned the third. The sarpanch then informed the police …, “said a senior police officer.
