Hezbollah Boasts 100,000-strong Force Targeted at Enemies at Home.
BEIRUT – The Hezbollah leader’s boast that he commands 100,000 fighters has come as a surprise to many Lebanese. That’s no less important because it was aimed at a national audience rather than the group’s archenemy, Israel.
That number would exceed the size of the Lebanese army by about 15,000 armed men. Experts say Hezbollah’s claim is likely an exaggeration.
But it is further increasing sectarian tensions in the small country ravaged by multiple crises.
Hezbollah’s claim Monday night is part of a growing confrontation over a judicial investigation into the massive Beirut port explosion last year that killed more than 215 people.
