As the rising strikes India in the Omicron variant and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) warned of a massive third wave’ if appropriate measures are not taken to prevent the transmission of the latest variant.
In a news release on 6 December, IMA encourages people to get vaccinated in the event of war, covering everyone who was scheduled to receive an additional dose.
IMA has also requested booster doses for health professionals of all ages to increase their immunity before the start of the third round.
What is Omicron?
The COVID-19 variant, ‘Omicron, was first identified within South Africa and then spread to more than 30 countries, including India. At present, India has reported 4 instances of Omicron among foreign travelers.
Two of these cases were discovered in Karnataka and one in Gujarat, and another in Maharashtra. As a result, India has required testing and quarantining for foreign returnees from “at-risk” nations in which Omicron instances have been discovered.
According to the Medical Journal of South Africa, Omicron only has a mild fever. However, it is more transmittable than other types. It is six times more transmittable than the Delta variant and is a source of concern for experts in the state.
IMA Warns Of large 3rd Wave due to Omicron Rise
IMA has also said it doesn’t support the idea of a travel ban. However, it appealed to the general public to avoid unnecessary travel.
In a statement highlighting the increase in COVID cases among kids, IMA demanded that govt should begin vaccinating children aged 12-18 years old soon.

IMA is also concerned about the lack of NEET PG counseling resulting in an insufficient number from two cohorts of postgraduates.
Omicron cases in India increasing
As of Monday, India is reporting 23 Omicron-related cases from the four states of India and one in UT. The first cases were discovered in India when two people confirmed positive for COVID-19, the Omicron COVID-19 variant in Karnataka, on 2 December.
The next day, India reported its third and fourth Omicron cases in Gujarat and Maharashtra. With Delhi being the first to write an Omicron instance, Maharashtra and Rajasthan reported 9 Omicron cases, bringing the total up to 23 cases.
