Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed that they pulled seven players from the India Open 2022 after testing positive for COVID-19.
The announcement comes amid an increase in cases of COVID-19 within the capital city of the nation.
The doubles players of players found to be in close contact with positive players were also taken off the team.
The tested positive players will receive an extra walkover in the initial round and play during the final game.
The BWF confirmed it confirmed the information in a press release on Wednesday.
“Testing protocols have been implemented following Badminton World Federation and Badminton Association of India guidelines to ensure the health and safety of all participants,” the BWF stated in its statement.
The Indian players enjoyed a successful day in the opening round.
India’s top shuttlers PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, made their second round.
At the same time, Saina Nehwal was lucky when her Czech Republic opponent Tereza Svabikova was hurt after winning the opening round.
HS Prannoy, too, registered an easy victory. Ashmita Chaliha from Assam also smashed the odds in the opening round.
Second-round matches are scheduled to begin today.
