Indian Government must protect Indians in Afghanistan: Congress.
Congress said Monday that the Modi government should “wake up from its slumber” and protect Indians in conflict-ravaged Afghanistan.
Describing the situation in Afghanistan as “extremely alarming”, the chief congressional spokesman, Randeep Surjewala, said that India’s strategic interests were at stake. “But the government has not put in place any plan to evacuate its citizens there, which is a serious abdication of duty,” he said.
“The Congress party strongly supports the protection of the interests of India and expects a mature political and diplomatic response from our government to the total collapse of the government in Afghanistan and the takeover of the Taliban,” he told reporters.
“The refusal of the Modi government to implement a well-thought-out plan to evacuate our citizens is a serious abdication of its duty and is totally unacceptable,” said Surjewala.
“The situation in Afghanistan is extremely alarming. India’s strategic interests are at stake. At stake is the safety and security of our embassy and its staff and of Indian citizens. Modi’s government needs to wake up from its slumber and protect Indian citizens in Afghanistan, ”Surjewala later tweeted.
The congressional leader said that the Taliban and Haqqani Network connections with Pakistan’s ISI and JeM, LeT, JuD are well known.
“The Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister must clearly explain our policy for the safe return of our citizens, embassy staff, and also our future relationship. This silence gives rise to apprehension that the government is hiding something from the country, ”he said.
