Indonesia Semeru volcanic eruption kills 13; 10 evacuated.
Ten people trapped following the Indonesian Semeru volcano erupted were taken to safety. However, Indonesia’s catastrophe mitigation Authority (BNPB) declared that the death toll from the catastrophe has risen to 13, with many injured.
Semeru, the highest mountain on Java island, created mountains of ash. And hot clouds on the weekend engulfed villages located in East Java province and sent people fleeing in fear.
The eruption destroyed a crucial bridge linking two regions around Lumajang and Malang, the capital city. In addition, Malang and destroyed buildings, officials said.
BNPB spokesperson Abdul Buhari said in an announcement that 13 people had been killed in the aftermath of the fire. Two of them were identified.
Ninety-eight people have been injured, including two pregnant women, and 902 were evacuated, the release said.
Thoriqul Haq, a local official from Lumajang, stated that miners working on the sand had been stuck at their work sites.
BNPB reported that at least 35 people were hospitalized, while Lumajang’s deputy director claimed that 41 burn victims were treated.
Semeru is over 3,600 meters (12,000 feet) high is among the volcanoes in Indonesia that have been active for more than 130 days. It erupted in Januaryand with no injuries.
Indonesia is located in between the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, an active seismic zone. As a result, various plates of the earth’s crust come together to result in a variety of volcanoes and earthquakes.
Separately, an earthquake of magnitude 6 struck north of Halmahera on Sunday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.
Halmahera is located about 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) northeast of Semeru.
