Interfaith marriage: tension in Agra town after the woman’s death.
Communal tension prevailed in a town in Agra on Saturday, a day after the alleged death of a woman by suicide.
According to the police, the victim, Varsha (22), had an interreligious marriage with a local person, Faheem (26), a year ago and lived far from the city.
The victim’s family has alleged that she did not commit suicide and was being harassed by her in-laws.
On Saturday, the police filed an FIR against Faheem and four members of his family under section 304-B of the IPC (death by dowry) at Shahganj Police Station, SSP, Agra, Sudhir Kumar Singh said.
According to the police, the victim was in the city for the past few days and was found hanged at the residence of her in-laws in Shahganj. After the death, minor clashes broke out in the area and a heavy police force was deployed.
“We received information that a woman was found hanging inside the house of her in-laws. Police officers arrived at the scene and sent the body for an autopsy, ”said SSP Singh. “Given the tension in the area, the police force of several police stations was deployed and the situation was controlled.”
He said: “Since the allegation is that the woman died under mysterious circumstances, we will await the post-mortem report for further investigation.”
Faheem and two family members have been arrested in connection with the case.
Faheem, police said, had a car repair shop in Agra. He and Varsha have married in court about a year ago and resided in Indore for some time, police said.
According to police, when they were about to seize the body on Friday night and send it in for an autopsy, Varsha’s family, including his brother Dushyant, refused to allow it to be taken away.
At this point, a group of people, which supposedly included some workers from Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), arrived there in support of the family and allegedly got into a confrontation with people from another community after heated discussions with relatives and Faheem’s neighbors, police said.
BJYM Brij Regional Secretary Gaurav Rajawat said: “When I arrived at the site, people from another community started throwing stones at us. I had gone there after the girl’s brother called me. ”
BJP Agra District Chairman Giriraj Singh Kushwaha said: “I have come to know that members of the party’s youth wing had gone to Shahganj. Yesterday I was out of the station and now I am going back to Agra. I’ll collect the details.”
“There is no possibility that he has committed suicide. She was not happy and told us that she was trying to adjust. It seems she couldn’t adapt anymore and they killed her, ”said the victim’s brother, Dushyant.
