Japan Planning to send Govt Officials to Beijing Winter Olympics

Japan Planning to send Govt Officials to Beijing Winter Olympics.

Japan will likely abandon plans to send officials to Beijing’s 2022 Olympic Winter Games. NHK reported that an announcement would be made as soon as Friday.

NHK reported that the government intends to send Tokyo 2020 President Seiko Hayashimoto and the heads of the Japanese Paralympic Committee and Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) to the Winter Games.

While the United States and other Western nations have declared a boycott of the Games due to concerns over human rights in China, Japan has taken a more relaxed tone.

Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, stated that he doesn’t plan to attend the Games this month, which will begin in February.

This issue shows Tokyo’s delicate position in the United States as an ally. However, Tokyo heavily depends on China as a trade partner and manufacturing base.

NHK reported that Kishida is under increasing pressure from his ruling Liberal Democratic Party to adopt a more aggressive stance on China.
