Jignesh Mevani Demands Arrest of Cop Accused in Dalit RTI activist killing

Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani was suspended from the Gujarat Assembly on Friday for a day after he repeatedly demanded the arrest of a deputy police inspector charged with the murder of a Dalit RTI activist in a village in the Bhavnagar district on March 2.

Mevani had sought an answer from the Minister of State for Home, Pradeepsinh Jadeja, as to why the deputy inspector was not being arrested.

On 2 March, a mob reportedly killed an Amrabhai Boricha (50), a resident of Sanodar in Bhavnagar’s Ghogha taluka, allegedly in the presence of a local ISP.

Notably, Mevani was also evicted from the Gujarat Assembly on Thursday after he raised the same issue.

Yesterday, the MLA of the Gujarat Congress held a strike by the Legislative Assembly after heated verbal exchanges with members of the ruling BJP on the issue of law and order in the state.

During his speech on the budget demands of the Department of the Interior, MLA Congress Amit Chavda mocked the BJP, claiming that several cities in the state are still known to “local bosses.”

After this, heated exchanges were witnessed and around 50 MLA from Congress went on strike, leaving only Mevani in the House representing the Opposition.

When MoS (Home) Pradeepsinh Jadeja began his speech after the departure of the congressmen, Mevani interrupted him and sought to know why a deputy police inspector (PSI) allegedly involved in the murder of a Dalit man has not been arrested so far.
