Indian badminton star Kidambi Srikanth beat Pablo Abian of Spain to start the BWF World Championships campaign on an impressive note on Sunday.
A 12th-seeded Indian defeated the local opponent 21-12 21-16 within 36 minutes in the opening round of the men’s singles competition.
The Indian male doubles duo comprised Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy. However, they lost straight games in the first round against Joel Elpe and Rasmus Kjaer from Denmark in the first round tournament.
Attri and Sumeeth were defeated 16-21 15-21 over 32 minutes, making an early exit at the prestigious event.
In the early morning hours earlier in the day, the women’s doubles team comprised of Pooja Dandu and Sanjana Santosh resigned after losing their first match 12-21 against the Dutch pair formed of Alyssa Tirtosentono and Imke van the Aar.
The reigning champion PV Sindhu who gave a bye in the opening round of play is set to begin her tournament against Martina Repiska of Slovakia.
