Kashmir’s separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani dies.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani took his last breath at his Srinagar residence at 10:35 p.m. on Wednesday. He was 91 years old at the time of his death.

The death of one of the foremost leaders of the Hurriyat Conference casts a shadow of mourning over the Valley.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani was born on September 29, 1929. The 90-year-old leader had been ill for some time. Gilani was one of the leaders of the Hurriyat Conference.

Gilani has not been active in recent years due to house arrest. The Jamaat-e-Islam leader Kashmir later formed Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.

But in June of last year, Gilani abruptly resigned from the Hurriyat leadership. He was previously elected MLA from the Sapore Center in Jammu and Kashmir in 1982, 1986, and 1986.

Previously, it spread false news about Gilani’s death many times. In June last year, the administration issued a high alert in the Valley over rumors about Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s health, sparking tensions.

Earlier, in a two-page statement announcing the Hurriyat, Gilani said that he should be buried at Mazar-i-Shuhada in Srinagar if he died.

Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed regret at the death of Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

He wrote: ‘I am saddened by the news of Mr. Gilani’s death. Although we disagree on many issues, I respect him for his ideals and beliefs.
