Neyyattinkara Assembly Elections 2020 | Neyyattinkara is an Assembly constituency in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. It belongs to the parliamentary constituency of Thiruvananthapuram.

KA Ansalan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is the MLA in office for this constituency. Ansalan, a first-time MLA, was Neyyattinkara’s area secretary for the CPM party. He had won the 2016 elections in the promise of providing 24-hour drinking water supply and better transportation system for the industrial city.

Neyyattinkara has long been a difficult seat with Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) closing in on each other. The seat is currently represented by KA Ansalan of the PC (M), a first-time MLA, who defeated R Selvaraja, an MLA on two occasions in the 2016 Assembly elections with 9,543 votes.

Selvaraja had won the state elections in 2011 on the CP (M) ballot. But a bypoll was needed in 2012 after he defected to Congress. Selvaraja retained his bypoll seat on a congressional ticket, but lost the seat to Ansalan in 2016.

In the 2012 by-elections, Selvaraja had defeated CPM’s F Lawrence with more than 6,000 votes, while in the 2011 state elections he had defeated Thampanoor Ravi from Congress with 6,702 votes.

Elections in Kerala have traditionally been a contest between the UDF and the LDF with a power swing between the two groups.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress-led UDF had won 19 of the state’s 20 Lok Sabha seats relying on incumbency against the ruling LDF. However, repeating a similar feat in the Assembly polls will be an arduous task for the UDF.

Not only has the LDF managed to overcome anti-incumbency in the 2020 local body polls, but it also managed to break into the UDF vote banks, particularly in the districts of Thrissur, Ernakulam and Kottayam.

The NDA, which is shaping up to be a third front in Kerala, hopes to increase its count in Assembly polls. Electoral participation: Overall voter turnout during the 2016 Assembly elections was 77.35 percent. The percentage of participation of women voters excluding the postal ballot was 75.97 percent and that of male voters excluding the postal ballot was 78.14 percent. At least 75.26 percent of registered voters had turned out to vote in the Neyyattinkara Assembly.

Population and demographics: Neyyattinkara Taluka of Thiruvananthapuram district has a total population of 8,80,986 according to the 2011 census. Of which 4,31,698 are male, while 4.49,288 are female.

The average sex ratio here is 1,041, which is much higher than the national average of 943 according to the 2011 census.

Of the total population, 46.4 percent live in urban areas while 53.6 percent live in rural areas. The average literacy rate in urban areas is 92.6 percent, while in rural areas it is 90.5 percent.

Of the total population, 9.8 percent belong to the category of programmed castes (SC), while programmed tribes (ST) constitute 0.4 percent of the total population. In the region, 55.2 percent of people follow Hinduism, followed by 38.07 percent of followers of Christianity. More than 6 percent of the people in Neyyattinkara follow Islam.
