“The President has ordered that Dr. Kiran Bedi cease to hold the position of Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry and has appointed Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, Governor of Telangana, to perform the functions of Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, in addition to his own duties, as of from the date he takes office, until regular arrangements are made for the post of Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, ”Ajay Kumar Singh, the president’s press secretary, said in a statement.
The development comes hours after the congressional government in the Union Territory. lost his majority with the resignation of another legislator from the ruling party, reducing the number of members of the party-led alliance to 14 in the assembly with an effective force of 28.
Seizing the opportunity, the opposition, which also has 14 MLAs in the 33-member household, demanded the resignation of Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, saying his government was in the minority. However, Narayanasamy rejected the demand, claiming that his government still enjoyed a ‘majority’ in the assembly, which will be put to elections in the coming months.
