Klopp compliments Benfica’s goalkeeper for refusing Liverpool’s bigger lead.
After Liverpool’s 3-1 win in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday, manager Juergen Klopp praised Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos for depriving the English side of a greater win.
Liverpool seized control of the tie with goals from Ibrahima Konate, Sadio Mane, and Luis Diaz in a comfortable victory in Lisbon, which might have been worse for the Portuguese side.
Klopp told BT Sport, “We should have scored more.”
“I think it’s really because of their goalkeeper, so credit him.” Their goalkeeper was undoubtedly the greatest player on the field. We played well, but he came up with a couple of outstanding stops.”
Klopp was pleased with the win and their two-goal edge heading into the second leg at Anfield next week.
Klopp stated, “It was a tough game, but I expected it.”
“They had these counter-attacks menace as they recovered the ball in the midfield.” It’s not always easy to maintain the ball in your possession all of the time. The further you go, the greater the risk. They also have some pretty good players.”
Following Liverpool’s dominance in the first half, Benfica played it in the second half in front of a raucous Luz crowd, who shouted their team back into the game when Darwin Nunez scored in the 49th minute to make it 2-1.
“It was difficult when they scored because the fans erupted immediately since they knew 2-0 was nothing more than that, and we saw it after they scored.” We didn’t expect the game to be as open as it was.
“That’s all there is to it.” We were victorious. Two goals to the good. Halftime. There isn’t anymore, and there isn’t any less. It would have been good to get another, but we’ll keep moving forward. We had a terrific result and moving into the second game. We know a lot more about our opponent and their abilities.”
