Man accused of torturing and killing his girlfriend’s puppy changes court statement.
The man accused of torturing and killing his girlfriend’s puppy changed his court statement Monday.
Phillip Savelli, 34, is charged with three counts of cruelty to a companion animal. He originally pleaded not guilty in June but changed his guilty plea on Monday.
The incident occurred in Highland Heights on June 3. Amy Beichler, director of the Ohio Public Animal Welfare Society, said Savelli repeatedly submerged a 10-month-old Yorkie in water and put it in the freezer until the dog died.
Goddard’s Law, named for the late FOX 8 meteorologist Dick Goddard, was passed in 2016, making physical harm to a companion animal a fifth-degree felony.
Savelli’s sentencing is scheduled for February 23 at 9 a.m. in the Cuyahoga County Common Appeal Court.
