The 20-year-old was detained for alleged rape and assault on Sunday.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) announced that they had been given additional time to
interview him after being granted the opportunity to extend it on Monday.
Manchester United has said he will not be playing for the club until further notice.
GMP stated that the person was arrested on Sunday after the police force “became aware
of social media posts and images shared by a woman who was reporting instances which
involved violence.”
It stated that magistrates had granted another extension of the time to keep the suspect in
custody until Wednesday.
A police spokesman said investigations were ongoing, and a woman was “offered expert
assistance.”
Developer of video games EA Sports said the forward was taken off of FIFA products.
A statement was released saying Greenwood was removed from active squads of FIFA 22
and suspended from being included as a player in FIFA Ultimate Team packs and Ultimate
Draft.
The company that makes sportswear Nike has previously stated that it has ended its
association with the footballer.
“We are extremely worried by the alarming accusations and are continuing to watch this
situation closely,” an official said.
Greenwood, whom the team made its debut in 2019, signed a four-year contract in
February 2021 following his rise to the top of the youth academy.
The following day Manchester United said the club “did not support violence of any type”
and that they had been informed of the allegations but would not comment further until
“facts are confirmed.”
In a second announcement, the organization added that it “reiterates its strong opposition
to violence of any sort.”
“As previously announced, Mason Greenwood will not participate in training with or for the
club until the club’s next notification,” a spokesman added.
