Meet the members of the committee appointed by the SC to investigate Pegasus.
The Supreme Court has appointed a three-member committee to investigate allegations of unauthorized surveillance using Pegasus, spyware developed by the Israeli firm NSO Group.
The committee members are Dr. Naveen Kumar Chaudhary, Dean of the National University of Forensic Sciences in Gandhinagar; Dr. Prabaharan P, Professor at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Kerala; and Dr. Ashwin Anil Gumaste, Associate Professor to the President of the Institute at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
It will be supervised by the retired judge, Judge RV Raveendran. The former Supreme Court Justice is a highly respected member of the legal community, and recently the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana referred to her as “one of the legends who have increased the prestige of the Supreme Court of India.”
In the order, the Court asked Judge Raveendran to “supervise the functioning of the Committee with respect to the methodology to be adopted, the procedure to be followed, the investigation and investigation to be carried out, and the preparation of the report.”
Prof. Dr. Naveen Kumar Chaudhary: An expert in the areas of cybersecurity, e-government, digital forensics, network security, and communications engineering, Professor Chaudhary is also a member of a UGC panel on developing an ecosystem for cybersecurity in institutions of higher education in India.
The institute had announced its appointment to the UGC panel in March of this year. Professor Chaudhary is dean of the National University of Forensic Sciences in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
According to his profile on the institute’s website, Professor Chaudhary received the Commendation Award from the President’s Chief of Staff Committee for drafting a visionary paper on capacity building in space technology in 2015.
Dr. Ashwin Anil Gumaste: Dr. Gumaste is Associate Professor of the Institute Chair (Computer Science and Engineering) at IIT Bombay. He received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Science and Technology Award in 2018.
Optical networks, broadband communication, and end-to-end networks are some of the areas in which he specializes. Dr. Gumaste played a pivotal role in the development of carrier ethernet switching routers.
A product that was marketed by Electronics Corporation of India Ltd as part of a major technology transfer agreement between IIT Bombay and the industry.
Dr. Prabaharan P: He is a professor at the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham School of Engineering and specializes in cybersecurity. He has published several articles on deep malware detection, intrusion detection, and ransomware detection, among others.
