Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the expansion of Phase I of the Chennai Metro on Sunday and laid the foundation for several other development projects. The prime minister dedicated the fourth Chennai Beach-Attipattu line and the railway electrification of the Villupuram-Cuddalore-Mayiladuturai Thanjavur-Mayiladuturai-Tiruvarur single line sections to the nation. Tamil Nadu Senior Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Senior Deputy Minister O Panneerselvam, along with other officials, were present at the event.
After the Prime Minister inaugurated the Phase I extension, passengers were able to travel for free on both the Blue Line and the Green Line.
The section from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar includes seven metro stations, with two subways.
