Microsoft Edge: According to reports, Microsoft has enabled a warning feature for Microsoft Edge browser users when they attempt to download Google Chrome.
The United States government filed an Antitrust Suit against Microsoft in 2001. It claimed that it had abused its monopolistic power by bundling its Internet Explorer browser and Windows PC Operating System.
Although it settled the lawsuit and the settlement expired in 2007, Microsoft is still cautious about how aggressively it has pushed its browsers on Windows. However, Microsoft seems to be ready to ramp up browsers wars once again with a new effort not to discourage people from downloading Google Chrome.
Microsoft has implemented a feature in Microsoft Edge to discourage users from downloading Google Chrome via the web browser. Instead, Microsoft Edge users will be directed to the Google Chrome download site by unrequested prompts.
These prompts are designed to insult Chrome and encourage users to use Edge. Microsoft Edge does not actively block users from downloading Google Chrome.
However, the prompt will redirect them away with misleading buttons.
In addition, multiple messages can be sent if the user visits the Google Chrome downloading website.
This message includes “I hate saving money,” as no one has ever said. Microsoft Edge is the best browser to shop online,” said, “That browser is so 2008!” So what’s new in Microsoft Edge? Microsoft Edge” Microsoft Edge” and “Microsoft Edge uses the same technology as Chrome with Microsoft’s added trust.”
These messages are accompanied by a single button that has its quote. For example, the shopping message has a button that reads, “Shop smarter.”
This button will redirect users to the Google Chrome website. It’s particularly frustrating that the button doesn’t indicate whether it’s “Stay” (or “No, thank You”) or “Stay.”
Also, it’s hard to miss the small “X” at the corner. The intent is to keep Edge users on Edge. Microsoft is open to testing what users feel is appropriate to accomplish this.
According to browser usage reports, Google Chrome was used by 52.5% to 66.77% of internet users as of October 2021. Edge is used between 3.3% and 4.6%.
Microsoft has plenty of room for growth, but Chrome’s dominance in the market will remain unaffected by aggressive efforts.
In that Safari is the default browser for iOS devices, Apple’s Safari browser looks similar to Microsoft Edge.
Apple iOS 14 makes it easy for iOS users to switch from Safari to Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. There are no warnings to users about not switching. Microsoft‘s changes will be controversial as they are reminiscent of 2001 in uncomfortably awkward ways.
