On day two of events at Birmingham 2022, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu broke many Commonwealth Games (CWG) records by delivering India its first gold medal.
The women’s 49 kg silver medalist from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics won the competition by a significant margin after lifting a total of 201 kg, including a personal best of 88 kg in snatch.
Mauritania’s Roilya Ranaivosoa took home silver with a total lift of 172 kg. In comparison, Hannah Kaminski of Canada took home bronze with a full lift of 171 kg.
The Indian star set new CWG records for her total lift of 201 kg and her snatch effort, which was also a CWG and Commonwealth record.
On a day when India unveiled their medal haul, winning one of each color in the sport of weightlifting, it wasn’t the only good news.
Sanket Mahadev Sargar began things off with a brave silver medal in the men’s 55kg event, losing barely 1kg to Malaysia’s Mohamad Aniq Bin Kasdan in the finals due to an injured shoulder.
Sanket lifted 248 kg in total, including 113 kg in snatch and 135 kg in clean and jerk. Bin Kasdan lost a six-kilogram edge in the snatch to Sanket.
Still, he then set a fantastic CWG record of 142 kg in the clean and jerk to win Malaysia’s first weightlifting gold of the day.
Gururaja Poojary of India won the bronze in the men’s 61 kg division after lifting 269 kg total and defeating Canada’s Youri Simrad by one.
Gururaja was able to snatch 118 kg and clean and jerk 151 kg. Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamad, who set a new CWG record by lifting 285 kg, gave Malaysia its second weightlifting gold of the day.
His 127 snatch and 158 clean and jerk reps both set CWG records. With a total lift of 273 kg, Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea took home the silver medal.
