NATO forces are on standby in the face of the fear of the Russian attack in Ukraine. 

NATO announced on Monday that it would be putting troops on standby. Also, they are strengthening eastern Europe by deploying more fighter jets and ships. 

Now they are deploying additional troops to its southern flank in what Russia has criticized as increasing tensions in Ukraine.

In announcing a string of announcements of deployments by allies in recent days, Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said NATO would adopt “all necessary measures.”

This was another signal to suggest that the West is ready for Russia to launch an attack on its neighbor after putting an estimated 100,000 troops close to that Ukrainian border.

“We will always respond to any deterioration of our security environment, including through strengthening our collective defense,” Stoltenberg stated in an announcement.

Then, he informed a news conference that the increased presence on NATO’s eastern flank could also include the deployment of more NATO battlegroups.

“We are also considering having battlegroups in the southeast of the alliance,” Stoltenberg stated.

At present, NATO has about 4,000 soldiers in multinational battalions across Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland with air defenses, tanks, and Intelligence and Surveillance units.

Russia isn’t the idea of an attack. However, after causing the crisis by encircling Ukraine by deploying forces from the east, north, and the south, Moscow will now use the Western response to justify its assertion that Russia is the victim rather than the source of the aggression.

U.S. officials said the Pentagon was completing efforts to select specific units that could be deployed to NATO’s eastern flank.

One of the officials suggested that up to 5,000 troops could be deployed. A NATO diplomat claimed Washington is considering slowly moving certain forces stationed in the western part of Europe to the eastern part of Europe in the next few weeks.

U.S. President Joe Biden will host a video conference to European leaders later on Monday, as part of the coordination with allies in response to the Russian build-up along Ukraine’s border, The White House said.

GROWING TENSIONS

NATO said that Denmark, Spain, France and France, Denmark, Spain, and the Netherlands are all thinking of sending troops, planes, or ships to the eastern part of Europe. Ukraine has a border with 4 NATO nations: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.

A Polish official has said Warsaw will decide whether to send soldiers to Ukraine.

As a sign of concern over concerns about the current situation Britain declared that they were removing some of its staff and dependents from its Embassy in Ukraine the day following the United States has announced that it is directing the family members of diplomats to be removed. U.S. diplomats are being allowed to leave on their own.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accused the West of “hysteria” and contained information “laced with lies.”

“As for specific actions, we see statements by the North Atlantic Alliance about reinforcement, pulling forces and resources to the eastern flank. All this leads to the fact that tensions are growing,” the official said.

“This is not happening because of what we, Russia, are doing. This is all happening because of what NATO and the U.S. are doing and due to the information they are spreading.”

Stock markets worldwide fell due to the possibility of a Russian attack deterring investors from higher-risk assets such as bitcoin. 

The bitcoin price also increased, which boosted crude oil and the dollar. The rouble sank to 14-month lows concerning dollars, while Russian bonds and stocks plummeted.

Russia has utilized its increased troop numbers to draw the West into talks after presenting demands for a new security map. 

It is requesting that NATO not acknowledge Ukraine and withdraw troops and weapons from the former Communist states in the eastern part of Europe, which joined Ukraine following during the Cold War.

Washington declares that these demands are not viable. Still, Washington is willing to talk about other options for the control of arms and missile deployments and confidence-building measures.

Russia is waiting for a written U.S. response this week following talks on Friday, the fourth round of talks this month that did not produce any breakthrough.
