Neetu David, one of India’s best female cricketers in the late 1990s and early 2000s, has been appointed chair of the women’s selection committee to replace Hemalata Kala, the BCCI announced on Saturday.

The other members of the panel are Mithu Mukherjee, Renu Margrate, Arati Vaidya, and V Kalpana, all former players from India.

The four-year term of the previous panel, led by Kala, ended in March 2020. It had Sudha Shah, Anjali Pendharkar, Shashi Gupta, and Lopamudra Banerjee as other members.

Her last task was to select the team for the Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia, where India finished runner-up.

“Due to seniority, Neetu David, the former left-arm player, will head the five-member committee,” BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said in a statement.

He holds the world record for the best bowling figures in an inning in a test: 8/53 against England at Jamshedpur in 1995.

“She is also the second tallest to take WODI land from India with 141 scalps and she was also the first from India to take 100 WODI land,” Shah observed.

The BCCI did not appoint a new selection panel, prompting criticism from many quarters, but the reason behind the delay was the absence of cricket activity due to the forced shutdown of COVID-19.

Indian women’s cricket will be back in action with a three-team women’s Challenger Series in the United Arab Emirates and for that, BCCI was required to form a new women’s selection panel.

There were many requests, but former left-armed player David, who was India’s biggest wicket winner at WODIS before Jhulan Goswami passed her, was the top contender. She took 141 wickets in 97 games.

David played 10 tests in which he had taken 41 wickets. He retired from international cricket in 2008.

“Neetu is a big name in Indian women’s cricket and she has the stature. I don’t think anyone can question Neetu’s credentials to become head of the selection panel, “a senior BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Among those who have applied for positions on the selection panel, former Maharashtra left-handed hitter Arati Vaidya, who played 3 Tests and 6 ODIs in the mid-to-late 1990s, was a contender from the west side.

From the east, the name of Mithu Mukherjee had been circulating. He was part of the previous panel and did not complete his full term. He still has at least two years in office.

“It is true that Mithu has been probed, but it is not known if he will eventually get the assignment. There are not too many names from the eastern area,” the source said.

A strong midfield candidate was Renu Margrate, a medium pacemaker, who played for India in five Tests and 23 ODIs in the late 1990s. Margaret, 45, represented Indian Railways in national tournaments.

The fifth candidate on the panel is Venkatacher Kalpana, 59, who played three Tests and 8 ODI between 1986 and 1991 as a wicketkeeper-hitter.
