Nepal Prime Minister Oli Refuses to Quit as PM
Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has indicated that he has no intention of resigning from his post, a day after the country’s Supreme Court reversed its decision to dissolve Parliament.
Instead, Oli mocked his opponents, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Madhav Kumar Nepal, who jointly head a rival faction of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal, for distributing sweets after the court verdict.
“Why are they celebrating? Maybe they will start demanding my resignation again, ”Oli said, making it clear that he would not resign.
However, his rivals have already begun to explore the formation of an alternative government, assuming that Oli’s departure is inevitable.
Prachanda and Madhav Nepal met Sher Bahadur Deuba, chairman of the Nepal Congress party and leader of the Opposition, with a proposal to jointly form the government.
It is not yet clear whether they proposed to support Deuba as the new prime minister, but they made it clear that Prachanda would not be in the running for the position. This is seen as an indication by the leaders of the rival faction of the CPN that they were ready to support a consensus candidate to overthrow Oli.
The unanimous verdict of the five-member constitutional bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, while reinstating the dissolved House of Representatives, also ordered the House to meet within 13 days, before 6 December. March.
