As the search for a gunman who opened fire in a New York subway car, injuring more than 20 people, authorities identified a “person of interest” in the attack on Wednesday morning (April 13, 2022).
The gunman is thought to have acted alone and fled the crime scene, according to police.
On Tuesday night, the attack occurred as a Manhattan-bound subway train approached an underground stop in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood.

Frank James, who authorities suspect rented the U-Haul vehicle, has been listed as a “person of interest” in the inquiry.
The van’s key was found at the crime site, and it had been hired in Philadelphia, according to police. Officials stated James had addresses in Philadelphia and Wisconsin.
Police describe the subway attacker as a large man wearing an orange vest, a grey sweatshirt, a green helmet, and a surgical mask.
According to the Commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD), the attack began in the train compartment as it approached the station.
A gas mask-wearing shooter detonated a smoke bomb and began the fire. The gunman took two canisters from his luggage and opened them, filling the train car with smoke.
According to authorities, ten persons were directly hit by gunfire, with five of them being hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
In addition, according to police, 13 more persons were hurt by smoke inhalation or other means due to the turmoil.
According to officials, all victims were expected to survive their injuries.
The suspect then discharged 33 shots from a Glock 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, which was later found together with three extended ammo magazines, a hatchet, some consumer-grade pyrotechnics, and a container of gasoline according to police.
