Nine killed, 6 injured in Guatemala concert stampede: Emergency authorities reported on Thursday that a stampede at a sizable rock event in the western city of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, claimed at least nine lives.
According to Maria del Carmen Sajquim, a Guatemala’s Western Regional Hospital representative, two 12-year-old children were among the deceased.
She said, “There were six injuries.”
Local firemen had reported on Twitter that the wounded individuals had been taken to the hospital and thought to have fractures.
According to witnesses, there were only two escape doors at the event location.
Images sent on Twitter by the Guatemalan Red Cross showed first aid personnel tending to the wounded and ambulances nearby. Local media hailed the yearly performance celebration of the nation’s independence day.
