“The government declares FASTag mandatory before midnight February 15/16, 2021. Any vehicle that is not equipped with FASTag or does not have a valid and functional FASTag that enters the FASTag lane, will have to pay a fare equal to twice the rate applicable to that category, “reported the government Bureau said today in a statement.

The ministry has clarified that this has been done to further promote the payment of fares through digital mode, reduce waiting time and fuel consumption, and provide a smooth passage through the fare squares. FASTag uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology, which provides users with a smooth crossing at toll plazas without stopping. Payment is made digitally through the FASTag linked to the bank wallet.

FASTag was launched in 2016 and four banks together issued almost one lakh of them. By 2017, their numbers rose to seven lakhs and more than 34 lakh FASTags were issued in 2018.

You can buy FASTags at bank branches or online services, including SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Bank of Baroda, Axis, City Union Bank. The FASTag will also be issued at NHAI outlets at all toll plazas, PayTM, e-commerce websites such as Amazon and also at the offices of the Highway Transportation Authority (RTA).
