Notebooks Lead Total PC Shipment in India in Q4 2020
The Indian PC market saw another strong quarter in the fourth quarter of 2020 with year-on-year (YoY) growth of 27 percent, data from International Data Corporation (IDC) India shows. Between October and December, 2.9 million PCs were shipped, making 2020 the largest year for laptop sales with 7.9 million shipments. These numbers include shipments for desktops, laptops, and workstations. Laptops contributed to three-quarters of total PC shipments in India in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to the data. Dell shipped the majority of units in the Indian PC market, dethroning HP from Q3 2020.
The last data published by IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker shows a total of 2.9 million desktops, laptops, and workstations that shipped in the third quarter of 2020. This was a 27 percent year-on-year growth compared to the fourth quarter of 2019, but about 500,000 units less compared to the previous quarter of the third quarter of 2020. Of the 2.9 million units, three-quarters of the total shipments were portable and IDC says that the demand for e-learning and remote work can be attributed to this growth.
With 62.1 percent year-on-year growth in notebooks in the fourth quarter of 2020, the year became the largest for notebooks with a total of 7.9 million units shipped throughout the year. This was a six percent growth over the previous year. Interestingly, desktop shipments fell 33.2 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year, which IDC says was due to companies shifting their focus to mobile devices.
When it comes to top-selling manufacturers, Dell led the pack with 57.1 percent year-on-year growth in shipments in the fourth quarter of 2020, outpacing HP. In the commercial segment, Dell experienced 15.2 percent year-over-year growth and captures 32.7 percent of the market share. HP fell to number two with its 26.7 percent market share with 8.8 percent growth year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2020. However, it maintained its leadership in the consumer segment as its shipments grew by 47.3 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2019.
Lenovo ranked third with a 21.7 percent market share, followed by Acer’s 8.5 percent and Asus’ 6.4 percent market share in Q4 2020.
