Olympic champion Van Vleuten announced to retire at the end of 2023 season.
Olympic champion Annemiek van Vleuten announced on Wednesday that she will stop competing in professional cycling after the 2023 season.
The 39-year-old, who competes with Movistar, earned silver in the road race and Olympic gold in the time trial at the 2018 Tokyo Games.
In a statement, Van Vleuten said, “The major reason, as I mentioned, to retire in 2023 is to do so when on top of my game, to complete the improvement process the team and we undertook in 2021, and to explore for new challenges in life.”
Following a terrifying high-speed incident during the road race at the 2016 Rio Games that left her with three damaged vertebrae and a concussion, Van Vleuten’s victory in Tokyo marked the end of an incredible turnaround.
In addition, she won the road race in 2019 and the world time trial championship in 2017 and 2018.
