P Chidambaram, a senior barrister, and veteran Congress leader, faced protests from lawyers and party supporters today in the Calcutta High Court as he defended a move by the Bengal government. In this case, state Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury took on the Trinamool Congress government’s sale of Metro Dairy shares to a company that makes food from plants.
Protesters who said they were lawyers for the Congress said that Mr. Chidambaram was “playing with the party’s feelings.”

Videos from the spot show lawyers following Mr. Chidambaram and yelling at “leadership like this” for the Congress’s downfall. There were also “Chidambaram, go back” signs.
An ally of Mamata Banerjee’s, Adhir Chowdhury, filed a petition with the court asking for an investigation into the sale, which he said was done at a “throwaway price.” The court agreed to look into the deal. Mr. Chidambaram was working for a private company when he was there.
Mr. Chowdhury’s lawyer, Bikash Bhattacharya, said that the sale was bad for the state. In what he said, Keventer has already sold some of the shares to a Singapore-based company for a lot more money.

People who support the Congress are going to protest, Adhir Chowdhury said.
