Pakistan Parliament will elect a new PM today. 

Following Imran Khan’s resignation, Pakistan’s National Assembly will meet today to elect a new prime minister (April 11, 2022). Nomination papers for Shehbaz Sharif, a joint opposition candidate, and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a PTI candidate, have been accepted for the top seat election, which will take place in the afternoon.

Shehbaz Sharif, who led the opposition’s attempt to depose Imran Khan in parliament, is widely likely to succeed.

On Sunday, Khan became the first Pakistani prime leader to be deposed by the no-confidence vote. During a 13-hour session, the cricketer-turned-politician fought on for almost a week after a united opposition attempted to unseat him. 

Still, his administration disintegrated in the early hours of Sunday. The no-confidence resolution received 174 votes in the 342-member parliament, giving opposition parties the necessary majority to install a new premier on Monday’s vote.

On the other hand, Khan claims that the government transition was the result of a foreign conspiracy.

Shehbaz Sharif, the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and younger brother of three-time Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, met with former President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Sunday to discuss the country’s present political situation.

According to sources, Sharif, 70 years old, plans to create a coalition government and hand over specific crucial ministries to the PPP.

Protests against Imran Khan’s removal are held around Pakistan by his supporters.

On Sunday, members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) held protests in many locations around the country to protest Imran Khan’s removal. 

Protest marches were held in cities including Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Malakand, Multan Khanewal, Khyber, Jhang, and Quetta, with protestors yelling anti-opposition slogans.
