Pat Cummins could not have wanted a better beginning to his time as the captain of Australia’s Test team because the quick bowler racked up five wickets in the opening innings of the opening Ashes Test against England in the Gabba.
Cummins scored 5/38 as England was knocked out for just 147 in the two innings of the series opener.
It was a baptism in the fire of Pat Cummins, who took over from Tim Paine as Australia’s Test captain before the highly anticipated Ashes series in Australia at home.
In the end, Cummins showed no signs of nervousness as he carried into his new role that is to be the strike bowler of Australia.

Cummins took 13.1 overs and five wickets, including Ben Stokes and a well-set Haseeb Hameed. The first loss as captain of the Australian Test team is Stokes, who was snatched up by a bounce that was a little higher and left the player on the left.
With the 5-wicket haul, Pat Cummins became only the second Australia captain following George Giffen in 1984 to get a 5-wicket haul during his first Test in his first stint as captain.
Cummins was also one of the captains to earn five wickets at the Ashes Test since Bob Willis in 1982.
In the meantime, Cummins also joined an elite group of captains who have racked up five wickets in their first day at the top position.
It was, in addition, Cummins’s debut 5-wicket haul during tests against England.

Pat Cummins also became the first Australian captain Richie Benaud in
1962 to get a 5-wicket run in Ashes and was the only captain after Michael Clarke in 2012 to take five wickets in an innings.

Cummins took his team from the ground by holding the Kookaburra ball in the air and was greeted with an enormous ovation from the Gabba crowd.
His pace partner Josh Hazlewood ran forward from the deep to grab an impressive low catch, which boosted his total. He then took his final catch of Chris Woakes (21), reduced to a desperate slogging.
Hazlewood performed the same feat to Cameron Green, catching a reckless pull by Ollie Pope (35) to give the seam-bowling player his first wicket in a test.
England began with a shaky beginning after Joe Root won the toss and chose to play on the grassy field, and Rory Burns became the first player to be dismissed on the opening game of an Ashes series in the last 85 years.
