PM Modi: Country will not forget sacrifice of people who fought for democracy during Emergency

The sacrifice of people who fought for democracy during the emergency will never be forgotten, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Thursday.

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had imposed an emergency on the country on June 25, 1975.

“The emergency was imposed in the country exactly 45 years ago. I salute the people who fought for the protection of democracy in India and then were tortured, ”Modi tweeted in Hindi.

The country will never forget its sacrifice, he said.

The Prime Minister also shared a short clip from one of his June 2019 “Mann ki Baat” radio speeches in which he had referred to the Emergency.

In that episode of his monthly radio show, Modi reminded people of the Emergency and urged them not to take democracy “for granted”, saying that in everyday life, it is difficult to savor the joy of democratic rights, unless they are taken away

In the 1977 Lok Sabha elections, the prime minister said, people, voted without concern for other rights and requirements.

They voted, he said, “just to save democracy. And the country had witnessed one of those elections in 1977. ”
