PM Modi pays tributes to freedom fighters Lokmanya Tilak, Chandra Shekhar Azad on birth anniversary.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a rich tribute to prominent freedom fighters Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Chandra Shekhar Azad on their birth anniversary on Friday and recalled their contributions to the country. Modi tweeted that Tilak strongly believed in Indian values and ethics, and her views on education and women’s empowerment continue to motivate a number of people.
He was an institution builder, nurturing many high-quality institutions that have done pioneering work over the years, the prime minister said. He said: “I bow to the great Lokmanya Tilak in his Jayanti. His thoughts and principles are more relevant than ever in the current circumstances when 130 crores of Indians have decided to build an Aatmanirbhar Bharat that is economically prosperous and socially progressive.”
Fondly remembering the revolutionary freedom fighter Azad, Modi said that he was a brave son of “Bharat Mata” and a remarkable man.
“During the prime of his youth, he plunged into liberating India from the clutches of imperialism. He was also a futuristic thinker and dreamed of a strong and just India,” he said.
Associated with a series of revolutionary incidents against the British colonial regime, Azad had promised never to be caught by the police and to remain “Azad” (free).
After being surrounded by the police after an encounter, he shot himself and died at the age of 24 in 1931. Born in 1856, Tilak was a pioneering leader of the Indian freedom movement and its concept of “swaraj” (self-government). it caught the imagination of the people.
