Police arrested U.S. Goalkeeper Solo on suspected DWI.
Hope Solo, a former United States goalkeeper, was detained in North Carolina on Thursday on charges of driving while drunk, according to a police department official.
According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, Solo was detained at a Walmart parking lot in Winston-Salem and charged with DWI, resisting arrest, and misdemeanor child abuse.
The agency also stated that Solo’s two children were in the vehicle at the time of the violation. She was taken into custody and then released.
“No further information will be provided regarding this arrest due to the anticipated prosecution,” a department official stated. Solo’s mugshot was also made public.
The event was addressed in a message to Solo’s Twitter account and credited to her lawyer, Rich Nichols.
“Hope can’t speak about this situation because of counsel’s advice, but she wants everyone to know that her children are her life, that she was released immediately and is now at home with her family, that the story is more sympathetic than the initial charges suggest, and that she looks forward to her opportunity to defend these charges,” the statement said.
During her career, Solo, largely regarded as one of the best female goalkeepers in history, helped the United States win two Olympic gold medals and a World Cup.
